FUNDRAISING GOAL FOR 2003: $10,000 DONATIONS AS OF 11/3 $8,314.10 I'M ONLY $1,685.90 SHORT OF MY GOAL! September 3, 2003 I am still in a bit of shock that Labor Day weekend has come and gone.... Ummmm, the last time I checked was May! Three toe nails are in the process of falling off. My heels look like I have a flesh eating virus and they feel like someone has taken a cheese grater to them. I have developed an aversion to Gatorade (sorta' like my inability to smell tequila without almost throwing up.) That said (with only a teeny bit of walker angst), I am really looking forward to and am ready as I'll ever be for Jewel #3 -Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Los Angeles in my West Coast Quad-Crown walk series! I am ready to pack all my gear into my CamelBak, tape up my feet, adorn myself in pink ribbon paraphernalia, slather on some sunscreen and hit the road! I will be flying to Burbank on Friday with fellow *hotties* Sandy, Christine & Pat - that in and of itself it a huge treat. I am so very blessed to walk with these amazing ladies & share this part of my journey with them. The route will take us straight through "the valley" from Universal City to Encino. Think hot, hot, hot.... so, as you sit drinking a cool beverage this weekend be sure to send some cooling vibes our way. We in turn, are doubly blessed that two of our *hottie* friends, Lynn and Phil Hall, are driving down to cheer and support us and all of the LA walkers from Phil's black Ford truck which I have dubbed the *hottie* mobile (unofficial sweep vehicle, cheerleader patrol and music depot.) Phil has accompanied us on nearly every one of my training walks since April, keeping head count on all of the walkers, providing cool water/Gatorade at every break, offering rides to pooped walkers. His main claim to fame; he blares Ray Orbisons's "Pretty Woman" from his stereo as he drives along with us on the route! Walkers city wide and across the country now call him by his nickname, "Pretty Woman Guy." It means to world to Sandy, Christine, Pat & I that they will be in LA as a security blanket.... Seeing friendly faces at around mile 20 makes it possible to press onto the finish! You may have asked yourself, "When did this turn into the West Coast Quad-Crown?" I have signed up to walk - believe it or not - a fourth event this year, the San Francisco Breast Cancer 3 Day this November! To date I have raised a whopping $7,769.10 with the amazing support of my 62 sponsors. I am not finished yet, I am still fundraising! My goal is raise a grand total of $10,000 this year, which means I am a little over $2,200 short of reaching this goal. If you were planning on sponsoring me, you can still do so to my Breast Cancer 3 Day account. CLICK HERE to visit my donation page to donate now. Maybe the monies you donate will help us find the key that unlocks the cure for this cancer and all cancers.... How amazing would that be??? Thank you all for... - listening to me talk about this for 6 months (with 2 1/2 more to go!) - supporting me & inspiring me in all of the various ways that each of you does to keep on walking - your generous donations which will give access to early detection to the medically underserved & funding for continuing research There is a breast cancer statistic that is often quoted: Every three minutes a woman in this country is diagnosed with breast cancer. That means that in the time in took you to read this email another woman will have found out she has this disease. Shocking, isn't it? Every three minutes... With much love and gratitude- Linda ************************************* June 5, 2003 I thought you might be interested in a Triple Crown - Avon Walk for Breast Cancer update... This year I will be sporting the same superlatively supportive, yet surprisingly squishy Saucony 3D GRID Hurricane's. They served me well last year and astonishingly, I have had very few blisters so far. Keep your fingers crossed! I have signed up to be a training walk leader (mostly to keep me on my training program so I wouldn’t be tempted to sleep in on the weekends.) I lead "Get Ready" walks every Saturday and Sunday departing from Crissy Field's Warming Hut Cafe. The first walk I lead was on March 8th and I had 4 people walk with me. Over Memorial Day weekend we did a "Walk Rehearsal Weekend" - walking the entire event mileage - 39 miles over two days. I had over 45 people participate! I now have 145 new friends; people who have come on one of my training walks or people with whom I have corresponded over these months. Our groups calls itself, The Warming Hut *Hotties*. I plan our training walk routes to take us up through the Presidio, out to The Palace of the Legion of Honor, through Golden Gate Park, along the Embarcadero, even across the Golden Gate Bride all of the way out to Tiburon! So, if you are out and about in San Francisco one of these weekend mornings and you see a pack of ladies...decked out in pink ribbons yelling..."Woohooo, go hottieeeeeeeeeees!" That's us! I would like to give an enormous thank you to each of my 44 remarkable sponsors who have helped me meet my fundraising minimum for the three Avon walks. I have raised $6850.50 in pledges to date! But, I'm not finished yet... In early May I learned that my beloved Breast Cancer 3 Day walk is back! It's the same walk that I have done the past two years, just new beneficiaries: The Susan Komen Foundation in conjunction with the National Philanthropic Trust. I have signed up to crew the November walk in San Francisco. I am issuing a challenge... I will walk this event (walking 3 days - 60 miles - from San Jose to San Francisco) if I raise the $2,000 minimum. If I do not raise the minimum, I will still be crewing. If you would were planning on sponsoring me or would like to support my “summer of walkin’ love” please clink on the link below or send your check to me made payable to “Breast Cancer 3 Day.” Through this experience I am continually reminded that we are all connected. The power and beauty that resides there has touched me profoundly. With Love and Happy Blister-Free Feet- Linda CLICK HERE TO DONATE to my SF Breast Cancer 3 Day Account ! Visit The Triple Crown Boobtique at CafeShops! *************************************** March 13, 2003 We are well into the New Year – 2003! This is the third year in a row that I will be participating in an Avon Walk. This year I am tripling my commitment to fighting breast cancer by participating in three walks. Yes, triple the training, triple the blisters and triple the impact! My heart was changed so dramatically the first year that I walked - I knew I would sign up to walk again. I find that I feel the same way this year! I have signed up to participate in a brand new event called the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, walking a marathon and a half - 39.3 miles - over two days. I am calling this adventure: THE WEST COAST TRIPLE CROWN The three walks that I will be participating in are: Jewel #1 - San Francisco - June 28 & 29th Jewel #2 - Portland - July 12 & 13th Jewel #3 - Los Angeles - September 6 & 7th What can possibly keep me walking? Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for all women and the leading cause of death in women between the ages of 40 and 55. Both its cause and the means for its cure remain undiscovered. In this country a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes. By the time you finish reading this letter, one more woman will hear the life changing words, “You have breast cancer.” And so I keep walking… I must raise a minimum of $5,250 to walk in these three events. Last year I walked every inch of the every mile and raised $11,125! I hope you’ll consider supporting me in this ongoing commitment with your tax-deductible donation. Your contribution, together with contributions from thousands of others, will have a serious impact on the fight against breast cancer. No contribution is too small to show your support! Every single dollar helps. As I embark on Walk #3, 4 & 5, I’m asking you for a lot, I know. Times are difficult, but it will take a lot from each of us if we’re ever going to find answers to difficult problems like this. I am depending on the generosity of friends and strangers to help me reach and maybe even exceed my fundraising goal. A woman dies every 14 minutes from breast cancer. By the time you have gone on the internet, read this page, thought about it, found your wallet, and decided how much to give, another life has been lost. Thank you in advance for your support & generosity! |
